Chocolate Button Cookies are cute button-shaped chocolate cookies made with cocoa cookie dough and a rich melted chocolate filling in the center. These homemade cookies are fun to shape, easy to share, and perfect for kids, parties, holidays, or a sweet afternoon snack. The cookie dough is made with unsalted butter, powdered sugar, egg, all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder, then chilled, shaped into thick round cookies, baked, and filled with melted chocolate while still warm.

The special part of this recipe is the button-like shape. After baking, the center of each warm cookie is gently pressed with a spoon to create a small well for the chocolate filling. This gives the cookies a cute button look while adding a rich chocolate center. If you are looking for a fun chocolate cookie recipe that feels playful but still simple to make at home, these Chocolate Button Cookies are a great choice.

  • 110 g powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 210 g all-purpose flour
  • 7 g baking powder
  • 45 g cocoa powder

Chocolate Filling

  • 100 g chocolate chips unsweetened or dark chocolate recommended

Instructions

  • First, make the cookie dough. Add 140g unsalted butter to a mixing bowl and melt it using a double boiler.
    Melt the Butter Base
  • Once the butter has melted, add 110g powdered sugar. Mix until the butter and powdered sugar are smooth and well combined.
    Add Powdered Sugar,
  • Add 1 egg and mix well again.
    Add Egg
  • Add 210g all-purpose flour, 45g cocoa powder, and 7g baking powder. You can sift the flour first to make it easier to mix. Mix everything until the dough comes together evenly.
    Fold in the Dry Ingredients
  • Place the dough on a sheet of plastic wrap. Wrap it completely and flatten it slightly.
    Shape and Chill the Dough
  • Place the wrapped dough on a cutting board or tray, then chill it in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • While the dough is chilling, prepare the chocolate filling. Add about 100g chocolate chips to a heatproof bowl and melt them using a double boiler. Once melted, set aside for later.
    Prepare the Smooth Chocolate Ganache
  • After chilling, cut the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a thick round cookie and place them on a baking tray. Do not press them too flat, so there is enough room to hold the chocolate filling later.
    Portion and Shape the Cookies
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C / 356°F for 15 minutes. Do not overbake the cookies, or they may become too crisp and difficult to press.
  • After baking, quickly press a small well in the center of each cookie with a spoon while the cookies are still warm. Pour the melted chocolate into the center wells and let the cookies cool.
    Press and Fill
  • Your rich and cute Chocolate Button Cookies are ready to enjoy.

Cooking & Storage Tips

  • When shaping the dough, keep each cookie slightly thick. Do not press the dough too flat, or there will not be enough space to hold the chocolate filling.
  • Do not overbake the cookies. If the surface becomes too crisp, it will be difficult to press a well in the center after baking.
  • Press the center wells while the cookies are still warm. Once the cookies cool down, they become firmer and may crack more easily.
  • If the melted chocolate becomes too thick while waiting, gently warm it again over a double boiler before filling the cookies.
  • Let the cookies cool completely after adding the chocolate filling so the center can set properly.
